Good Personal Hygiene: Need to Fight against the Spread of Infectious Diseases

Abstract

According to World Health Organization (WHO) “Health is the state of complete physical, mental, spiritual and social well-being and not merely absence of disease or infirmity”. Health is a perception of positive state of well being, where there is harmony between body and mind. It has been well said that only that person can be called really healthy who has a sound mind in a sound body. Health is the state of life that allows people to live and work.

Hygiene is defined as conditions or practices conducive tomaintaining health and preventing disease. Hygiene hasbeen shown to reduce communicable diseases and improvesocial outcomes in the community. There are barriers inimproving hygiene especially in countries with low socio-economic conditions. Now days, developing countries likeBangladesh continually struggling to cope with scarceresources and poor hygienic practices in the community.The common type of hygiene includes personal hygiene,food hygiene, water hygiene and hygiene during wastedisposal. There are several challenges in achieving highlevel of hygiene which include poverty, lack of politicalcommitment, lack of community participation, genderinequality, inadequate data, lack of inadequatecoordination between stakeholders, and behavioral issues.To reduce these challenges, measures to be taken arecommunity empowerment and involvement, equitableaccess to hygiene needs, strong political commitment,promoting gender equality, and enhancing young adolescents in different levels.
