The aim of this study is to identify risk factors responsible for IHDamong Bangladeshi people and to assess awareness and practice about risk factors of ischemic heart disease (IHD).Methods:This cross-sectional observational study included all acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients admittedin department of cardiology, BSMMU, Dhaka from September 2011 to December 2011. Diagnosis was confirmedby ECG and cardiac biomarkers. Results: In this study out of all the participants, majority were male (84%) and16% were female and male female ratio was around 5:1. Most of our patients were 41-50 years of age (37%) andonly minority of them were illiterate and education level of majority were SSC and above. The most frequent riskfactors were hypertension (64%), diabetes mellitus (47%), smoking (32%), obesity, dyslipidaemia, family historyof IHD. Awareness about relation of AMI with hypertension-7.8%, diabetes mellitus-38.3%, smoking-14.75%,obesity-13.16%, dyslipidaemia- 5.72%. Conclusion: This study reveals that hypertension is the most prevalent riskfactor in AMI patients admitted in a tertiary level hospital followed by diabetes mellitus and smoking. But amongstpatients, awareness about these risk factors is less than that of developed countries. So community based IHD educationprogram will be helpful to reduce the incidence of IHD.
